Tunica-Biloxi Tribal Police Function:

The primary functions of the Police Department are the preservation of the public peace and order, the prevention and detection of crime, the apprehension of offenders, and the protection of persons and property.  It must uphold the Constitution of the United States, enforce the laws of the State and the ordinances of the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe.

Chief of Police:

The Chief of Police shall have personal direction and supervision over all personnel within the department.  He is responsible for making sure the Police Department functions within the approved yearly budget.   Maintain an open and working relationship with other law enforcement agencies.  Responsible for making sure that all Tribal Police officers meet the minimum standards as outlined by the State of Louisiana and the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe.  The Chief of Police is ultimately responsible and accountable for all actions made by the department.

Assistant Chief of Police:

Police DepartmentThe Assistant Chief of Police shall also have personal direction and supervision over all personnel within the department with the exception of the Chief of Police.  He shall be in charge of operations, subject, at all times to the orders of the Chief of Police.  He fulfills the duties and responsibilities of the department and assumes complete charge of the department and is held accountable for all actions of the department in the absence of the Chief of Police.  The Assistant Chief is responsible for conveying all orders of the Chief to the Lieutenant, Detective, Sergeant, and Patrol Officers, including K-9. 

Lieutenant:

The Lieutenant shall have personal direction and supervision over all personnel within the department with the exception of the Chief and Assistant Chief.  He fulfills the duties and responsibilities of the department and assumes complete charge of the department and is held accountable for all actions of the department while in charge in the absence of the Chief and Assistant Chief.  He is also responsible for reviewing and approving all written reports and compiling a monthly drug report, which is submitted to the Bureau of Indian Affairs.  The Lieutenant also logs and stores all evidence. The Lieutenant is also in charge of grant writing in order to obtain funding for the Police Department.  He also performs all duties listed under the Patrol Division.

Detective:

The detective is responsible for investigating all major crimes including but not limited to murder, sexual assault (rape), felony thefts, armed robbery, narcotics etc.  He is also responsible for gathering all evidence and submitting it to the Lieutenant for proper storage and/or submission to the crime lab.  The detective answers to the Chief, Assistant Chief and Lieutenant.  He also performs all duties listed under the Patrol Division. 

Sergeant:

The Sergeant is responsible for supervising all officers in the patrol division. His responsibilities include generating daily work schedules, organizing extra security for special events conducted on the reservation and at Paragon Casino Resort.  He also performs all duties listed under the Patrol Division.

K9 Officer:

The K-9 officer is responsible for investigating all calls involving any suspected narcotics under the direct supervision of the Lieutenant and Detective.  He is also responsible for gathering all evidence and submitting it to the Lieutenant for proper storage and/or submission to the crime lab.  This officer is also responsible for maintaining the upkeep and well being of the K-9 (Everest).  He also performs all duties listed under the Patrol Division. 

Patrol Division:

The duties and responsibilities of the patrolman are to preserve public peace, protect life and property, prevent crime, arrest violators of the law, and enforcement all laws and ordinances of the Federal, State, and Tribal Criminal Code.  Some of their duties are but not limited to answering all calls in a timely manner, investigate and report on all criminal activity, work traffic accidents, assist the public and other law enforcement agencies, armored car detail, serve civil and criminal subpoenas, serve warrants, issue traffic citations, etc.

Dispatcher:

The duties and responsibilities of the dispatcher is to forward all calls to the on duty patrolman whether the call is made by telephone, radio, or in person to the police department. He is responsible for knowing the location of the officer at all times and keeping in contact with the officer in order to maintain the safety of the officer.   He is responsible for keeping a log of all calls during his shift and recording any arrests that are made and all information conveyed to him by the officer.  The dispatcher is also responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of all units and the police department. The dispatcher answers to the patrolman on duty. 

Secretary: 

The duties and responsibilities of the secretary are to assist the public coming into the Police Department.  Answer all incoming telephone calls for the police department and deliver messages accordingly.  Type all correspondence for the Police Department, gather information for the monthly crime report submitted to the Bureau of Indian Affairs, record hours worked by employees of the Police Department and assist the patrolmen with preparation of affidavits and warrants as needed.  Make all travel arrangements for the officers to attend workshops.
